Water, water, water

We all know the importance of drinking water.  It is not only an essential for life but it also helps us keep that youthful glow.  The key is getting enough water.  There are so many thoughts on water intake out there but the one that I was taught, and I have found that makes ME feel the best is this calculation:  take your weight and multiply it by 2/3 (67%).  That gives you how many ounces a day you should be drinking.  If you exercise you need to drink an additional 12 ounces of water for every 30 minutes of exercise.

I weigh 153 pound.  153 x .67 = 102.51 ounces in a day.  I worked out for an hour so I need to drink an additonal 24 ounces to make it a total of 127 ounces (I like to round up!) for the day!  That’s a lot of water intake to keep track of!!  I messed around with a lot of different tracking systems:  apps on my phone, notes on my phone, google doc so I could track it at home and at work…none of them worked as well as this handy little system here:

How I track my water intake.

I aim to get all 100 ounces in at work during the day.  I have a 25 ounce water bottle that I just fill up through out the day and move the tabs to either the left or the right as I finish them.  Pretty easy and fool proof.  I don’t normally have anything written on the tabs except for the hours I hope to finish the water by: 10, 12, 2 and 4…but for the sake of this picture and explaining the idea I added more to the tabs.  I find that is easiest for me get all my water in while I am at work and to break it up in two hour time slots so I’m not constantly going to the bathroom and since I’m there from 8am until 5pm 🙂  On the days that I work out, which are Tuesday – Saturday, I’ll add on the extra water once I get home.  This system has worked great for me for a while now.  I’m one of those weird people that actually like water so I never really have had an issue with just going to the tap and filling up my water bottle.  Our family is big on sparkling water so I’ll sometimes make some with strawberries or cucumbers or apples with our soda stream (the only reason why we bought one!).  Definitely helps give you that fizzy taste to switch things up if you like soda or flavored water with out all the sugar and added chemicals!
